Playwright Spotlight: Pearl Lam

Author of MidWife Crisis  (2016 Cupcake Spring Readings– Young Playwrights Day)

My name’s Pearl and I’m a senior at Lakeside School. I actually started drama fairly late – my junior year, but the arts have always been a huge part of my life. I have played piano for twelve years, and found that each piece is a story and it’s up to the pianist to tell it. I’ve also always been interested in making videos (read: a video of 14 year old me doing a Gangnam style parody). I love this form of creativity, which is why I enjoy drama so much. I had a blast writing this play and I’m flattered that I get to work with Live Girls! Theater!

Where did the idea for your play come from?

I was sitting in rehearsal one day thinking about pregnancy (as I always do) and realized that I wanted to see someone give birth on stage.

What was your favorite moment in working on this piece?

Watching my classmates perform part of it.

What projects are you currently working on?

A one act written by another classmate and the Drama III showcase for school.

Finish this sentence- “I love theater that…”

Makes me laugh.

Who is your current artist crush (any discipline)?

Tatiana Maslany!!!

What was the best advice you were given as a theater artist?

Don’t hold back.

What is the one thing you know as an artist now that you wish you could tell your younger self?

Invest in your scene partner.

Outside of theater, what are you really into right now?

Music, the outdoors, and Pretty Little Liars (don’t judge).

What is your favorite and least favorite word?

Quill. Bra.
